Cellular Beam Application Technology

Cellular Beam Application Technology.

A tried and tested method of construction in the UK and elsewhere is to combine the concrete slab within the depth of the steel beam in order to create extremely shallow or slim floor construction.

Westok Ultra Shallow Floor Beams (USFB) is the most flexible and practical approach to this method of construction.

There is no “standard” beam size or depth. Each design is carried out to achieve the EXACT depth specified by the Engineer or client. To date beams as low as 165mm have been used, though the typical range requested is between 190mm to 350mm.

There is no incremental increase in beam depth, so if a beam of 193mm is required our Advisory Engineers will design to exactly 193mm etc…

The beams comprise pronouncedly asymmetric cellular tees, to provide a wide bearing for either pre-cast units (minimum 75mm bearing used in our designs unless requested otherwise) or a profiled metal deck (minimum 50mm bearing offered).

The beams are available from ex stock steel, and there is no minimum order quantity. To date we have supplied projects ranging from 5 beams, to 250 beams.

Sequential site works of USFB erection and concreting
.

Frame erected with decking bundles placed ready for setting out. Safety netting fixed below beams. Beams un-painted as concrete will encase sections.

Detail at connection of primary and secondary beams. Depths of Intermediate beams can be fabricated to allow constant levels of flanges.

Decking laid out. Web holes for rebar line through, allowing simple details for deck arrangements.

Close up at interface between decking and USFB

Mesh and tie rebar being positioned over / through USFB sections.

Tie rebar and mesh completed. Spacer strips placed to maintain mesh level over slab.

Deck arrangement at intersection of primary and
secondary beams. Irregular grid arrangements are
easily accommodated.

First pour of concrete complete to construction joint
at beam location.

Concrete will flow through web holes, allowing increased shear bond of steel and concrete, and providing good keying for second pour.

Site sprayed intumescent fire protection applied to soffit of beam and sides of flange only.

Following de-propping of deck, level soffit is available for following operations to fit services and finishes.
